Language Holidays in Italy

by Langues Services Firenze and The Watermill at Posara

“  A very well-structured week with a mixture of classes at the Watermill and trips to areas of interest locally.  These trips provided us with an invaluable opportunity to practice what we had learnt in class.  We engaged in conversation with local Italians in a number of different scenarios:  a local market, cafes and restaurants, shops, train stations etc.  Our tutor, Francesca, was local to the area and we also had the opportunity to meet with some of her family and friends and practice our social skills in terms of conversation! Francesca was absolutely delightful.  She was on hand from breakfast time until after dinner every day and was always cheerful and very positive.  She took great pains to answer any queries we had and also had no difficulty in coping with the varying ability levels within our group.  We learnt a lot and, just as importantly, had great fun doing so! Given the opportunity, I would have no hesitation in signing up for another course with Francesca.  I learnt a lot, met some new friends, saw some beautiful places and enjoyed the wonderful surroundings of the Watermill at Posara.  All things considered a perfect holiday!’”

“ We all had such Fun! I had a wonderful time on the language course and laughed so much!  Francesca was fantastic and designed a course that we could all follow at our own level, complete beginners to slightly more than complete beginners.  There was lots of role play and games in Italian, like “Who am I?” and “Battleships”.  We had plenty of opportunity to talk to local Italians in cafes and the market in Fivizzano.  We learned how to buy things in the market, order food and drink and ask directions.  I feel confident to travel round Italy and know that I could find accommodation, buy food, drink and other items, travel on trains or hire bikes. My confidence and knowledge has improved immensely over the week and Francesca has even sent us exercises to do at home to keep our learning going.  She was tireless and gave us so much. The standard of accommodation, food, drink and your hospitality was, as ever, excellent.”

Learn Italian immersed in one of the most beautiful and interesting regions of Italy, nestling between the Apuan Alps (where Michelangelo found his precious marble) and the majestic Apennines, the mountainous backbone of Italy. Enjoy your stay at a beautiful ancient watermill, lovingly restored, with views over the river, the gardens and the mountains. Savour a journey through history, nature and rural traditions in unspoilt Lunigiana and visit the stunning seaside villages of the Cinque Terre.

Our week-long language holidays are designed for learning Italian in the most “natural” and enjoyable way ever.

Your immersion in the language and culture of real Italians will be customised for you, to suit your curiosity
and interests.
Every one of your experiences will be connected to a point of grammar or syntax, helping you effortlessly commit rules to memory.

During your week-long language holiday, you will stay at the marvellous Watermill of Posara, a historic complex of buildings, lovingly restored, around a sunny courtyard. It’s the perfect setting for a relaxing yet inspirational vacation in a genuine Italian environment. The mill is set in a gentle valley with the majestic peaks of the Apennines in the distance.

Lunigiana is a truly unspoilt region in the North of Tuscany, in the province of Massa Carrara. You’ll be amazed by the natural beauty of its mountains, river valleys, vineyards and olive groves. You can savour its rich rural traditions and historic heritage from Bronze Age “Stele” statues to medieval castles and churches. You’ll change pace and settle into a genuine Italian rhythm and lifestyle, finding time to be closer to nature and delight in its simple pleasures.

Ours is not an ordinary language course, but a unique experience, where people can start - or continue - learning Italian in a ‘natural’ and pleasant way. We guarantee that we will make you feel part of true Italian community, if only for a short time.

• Course itinerary •

The course will include indoor and outdoor lessons, both in the characteristic and comfortable locations of The Watermill at Posara and in the surrounding areas of the region. Lessons will be alternated with lunch and various outside activities, all conducted in Italian (level permitting).

You’ll practise, in a natural setting, what you’ve learned in the lessons, whether it’s visiting historic sites and natural beauty spots, walking in the wonderful scenery,  shopping in the market square,  or chatting with the locals over a coffee or at dinner.

You’ll also have enough time to rest and relax, either in the tranquil ambiance of The Watermill and its grounds, or during the different excursions. An additional attraction is the mouth-watering food at The Watermill (we can cater for vegetarians and others with dietary requirements) and you will also sample regional specialities in local cafés and restaurants.

• Who we are •

Langues Services has been a language school in Florence since 2006. Besides offering courses to companies, the school also provides private courses for adults and children, and cultural activities to promote encounters with locals and make new friends.
Langues Services’ philosophy and method are inspired by the work of Professor Bertrand Schwartz of Paris University, the educationalist who overturned the concept of teaching to adults, and proposed an approach that develops not only theoretical knowledge but also practical know-how. The school aims to enhance the personal qualities of each student, tailoring the teaching to their needs and ambitions and establishing mutual, active and confident relationships, where the student is the true protagonist in the course.

Loretta Barbarossa was a teacher of French for foreigners at the Open University in Charleroi in Belgium, when she was invited to attend a seminar about the Schwartz approach to language teaching. That seminar changed her life: she discovered that every person has an innate capacity to learn a language, just as every human being is born to communicate. After moving to Florence some years ago, she founded Langues Services Firenze: a different kind of language school, where every person can find a course that fits their needs and expectations and where, besides studying language, people can meet and get to know each other.

Francesca La Sala has been teaching with Langues Services since 2007. She loves meeting people of all ages and cultures. She is also a nature lover and a cognoscente of Lunigiana, the land of her forefathers, where she was raised. Francesca has an artistic background and has a passion for the figurative and graphic arts, particularly from the Renaissance period and from prehistory; this love add a futher dimension to her teaching.

The Watermill Posara: Lois and Bill Breckon, who own and run the watermill have more than 20 years’ experience in running relaxing, inspiring and fun-filled creative holidays and courses. They are world-famous for their creative writing courses and for their painting courses with renowned international tutors, attended by students from all over the world (70 different countries at the last count). Lois has a particular experience in publishing and marketing. For many years she worked alongside Bill in Media Alliance, an international marketing and communications consultancy. With Bill she also organised the restoration of a 16th-century castle in Scotland, establishing it as an acclaimed centre of excellence for residential painting and creative writing courses. Bill’s early career was as a writer and broadcaster specialising in medical topics in current and consumer affairs: it spanned newspapers and magazines, radio, television and books. He set up and ran the international communications agency, Media Alliance, but is now largely retired. He has just published a detective story, A Matter of Perspective, set in Renaissance Florence. Where the hero is the miller’s son at Posara!
